The barrel is the most important link between sound generator (mouthpiece/reed) and resonator (upper/lower joint and bell). Within this small part of the instrument, we have the possibility

• to make changes to the basic intonation of the clarinet, in a range of about 3 - 4 Hz
  
• to fine tune the intonation in between the registers
  
• to make an adaptation to different mouthpieces
  
• to improve the sound characteristics and also the air resistance
